how does family sponsorship work in Canada ?

Sponsoring your family member means that they will be acquiring the permanent residence of Canada. The processing time is about 12 months for spouses and it varies for dependent children depending on the country of residence. 

When applying to sponsor a family member, it is crucial to prove the relationship between the sponsored person and the Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident, and also requires a commitment to provide for them for a number of years depending on the type of relationship. 

All family members to be sponsored will be asked to undergo a medical examination. 

Requirements to sponsor your spouse, partner or dependent children

  • 18 years of age or older

  • Canadian citizen or Permanent Resident

  • Sign an undertaking promising to provide for the basic requirement of the sponsored person(s)​​

  • (if you are in Quebec please see Quebec section)

Restriction to sponsor:

  • Receiving social assistance for a reason other than disability

  • in default of any undertaking

  • Subject to a removal order, convicted of a crime or detained 

  • Previously sponsored a spouse who became PR less than 3 years ago

  • Was previously sponsored as spouse and became PR less than 5 years ago.

Requirements to sponsor your parents or grandparents 

  • 18 years of age or older

  • Canadian citizen or Permanent Resident

  • Sign an undertaking promising to provide for the basic requirement of the sponsored person(s)

  • Meet the minimum income requirement LICO + 30% for the 3 previous taxation years.

*Super visa available for temporary travel for parents and grand parents

income required for the 3 tax years right before the day you apply (sponsors applying in 2021)

Note: To prove they meet the MNI requirement, potential sponsors must provide their Notice of Assessment from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) for the last 3 taxation years before applying (2020, 2019 and 2018).

LICO requirement for Family Sponsorship in Quebec 

Basic income required of the sponsor to meet his or her own family unit's basic needs.(Table.1)

Additional income required of the sponsor to meet the basic needs of the sponsored person and his or her family members.(Table.2)
